Women in Islam
Three women discuss the hijab and the veil. As revision to the topic 'Women in Islam', please watch this and comment on the discussion - especially in the light of the French call for the veil to banned in public places.
Muslim women are encouraged to dress modestly and so are the men. In a mixed society such as the UK we are bound to see a community mixing rapidly with an increase in people from many cultural backgrounds as well as their religious ethics. The UK may perceive Muslim women who practice their religion by wearing the niqab or the veil as oppressed. One of the verses in the Qur’an protects a woman's fundamental rights. Verse 59 of Surah Al-Ahzaab reads: "O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters and the believing women, that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (when outside) : so that they should be known (as such) and not molested". This shows that women need to cover for their own safety. As well as placing safety on women the Qur’an gives women importance as they are the bearer of children. According to the Qur’an, the reason why Muslim women should wear an outer garment when going out of their homes is that they may be recognised as "Believing" women and differentiated from streetwalkers for whom sexual harassment is likely to occur. The purpose of this verse was not to confine women to their homes, but to make it safe for them to go about their daily business without attracting attention. The French think that Muslim women wearing the Niqab is not suitable as the Muslim women seem oppressed. It is women who have the right to agree whether to wear it or not and therefore not up to the government to decide. I believe that women should cover themselves properly in order to deflect attention from unwanted eyes. Some believe it is form of identity that one can use to detach themselves from the westernized identity. The prophet Muhammad pbuh lived a simple life, and wore simple clothing, therefore it is sunnah to wear clothing that does not reveal our bodies but maintains covering.
Some will argue in favour of the French call to ban the veil in public places as they see the hijab and the veil as a way of "making men behave better" rather than in favour of the woman. Another argument is that according to Jack Straw life is made up of chance meetings with strangers...but this is made difficult by people covering themselves with the veil and so by banning it, it will allow everyone more oppurtunities of communication. The veil is seen by some as a form of oppression as they believe that muslim men force their women to wear the veil and so by removing this oppression they are liberating muslim women. The hijab is also seen as a barrier as it is women succuming to the stereotypes and ideologies of philosphers rather portraying themselves and Islam. Another argument in favour of the ban is that both the veil and hijab is a form of exclusion. In Islam muslims are meant to missionarys and so they are supposed "attract" others towards the religion rather repeling them and the veil and hijab repel to Islam.
Others will argue against the banning of the veil because they see it as a benefit to women. The veil is seen as a way of allowing women to honour and respect themselves as in essence the it gives them modesty. It also allows women to be seen and judged on they character and personality rather than what they look like. Also, the fact that the veil is not compulsory in Islam is seen as a reason for it not to be banned. The veil is an individual and spiritual choice; it is not forced upon women. This exmamplifies the fact that it portrays them as a person with their own character and freedoms and so the both the veil and the hijab is seen as providing muslim women with rights rather then it being a form of oppression by men.
The purpose of the veil is to protect oneself from the evil actions as well as keeping a woman’s modesty for the sake of God .On the other hand Muslim women should not wear the veil as the veil can act as a communication barrier, furthermore some women would tend to isolate themselves from the social environment and going against the country’s secular values. So it seems that women that wear the Hijab are fulfilling God’s wishes and are not oppressed. It is women who have the right to agree whether to wear the veil or not and therefore not up to the government to decide.
Muslim women are encouraged to dress modestly and so are the men. In a mixed western society we are bound to see a community mixing rapidly with an increase in people from many cultural backgrounds as well as their religious ethics. In some countries such as France women who practice their religion by wearing the Niqab or the veil are described as oppressed or radical extremists. The following will state positives and negatives of wearing the veil in the light of the French call for the veil to be banned in public places. One of the verses in the Qur’an protects a woman's fundamental rights. Verse 59 of Surah Al-Ahzaab reads: "O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters and the believing women, that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (when outside): so that they should be known (as such) and not molested". In Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 8, Number 395: Narrated 'Umar bin Khattab “tell thy wives to cover themselves from the men because good and bad ones talk to them.” This quote is proclaiming to married men that their wives should be covered as other men (good or bad) can approach them which could lead on to other sins. However according to some critics in France such as Nicolas Sarkozy, the current president of the French Republic put forward his argument that “…the veil is not welcome in France because it is contrary to our values and contrary to the ideals we have of a woman's dignity." The quote above by Sarkozy suggest that women wearing the veil are not following the country’s traditional values and not adhering to standards that have been set in France. These women are totally confining themselves away from the rest of the community and not engaging in social activities. One can then argue against this statement due to sheer amount of neglect that has been placed on women wearing the Niqab, women are not oppressed by wearing the Niqab; instead it is a form of identifying a believer from the rest of the crowd. This statement given by Sarkozy is inconsistent, due to France having a democracy and the freedom of speech. It has been revealed by the media that the French government wished to ban the Hijab; this may sound as an outrage to those who believe in wearing the head scarf. The French secular society wishes to see people open, the veil restricts women from doing so. Some state schools in France have banned the Hijab in order to liberate the women. Another case study over the veil had been published on the BBC website over a Muslim woman named Aishah Azmi who wore the veil and had been suspended as the veil acted as a communication barrier. Aishah Azmi claimed that the “…children had no problem in understanding what I said…they are aware of my body language and my eye expressions…” the veil is not a communication barrier but a way to present women to the public modestly without revealing the body. The advantage over the veil has been stated by God who has shown us the wisdom behind the wearing of the Hijab: `And when you ask them (the Prophet's wives) for anything you want, ask them from behind a screen, that is purer for your hearts and their hearts.' (Surah Al-Ahzaab Verse 53).The Hijab makes for greater purity for the hearts of believing men and women because it screens against the desire of the heart. The heart is more pure when the sight is blocked by Hijab and as a result the prevention of evil actions.
This is a very intrested topic in society. the argument left by "Amirul Islam" is very compelling and the appropiate use of the verse from the Quran has really grasped the message of how women should be treated in society.
i think it should be banned because other people take advantage of it by wearing it and robbing people this has already happend this year in a jewellery shop
